Cod - Skrei

The Cod – Skrei is the Norwegian Cod (Gadus Morhua) that complies specific quality standards.
It is caught along the coast of Lofoten Islands and of Vesterålen where it arrives after that it has swum for thousands of kilometres starting from North, from the Barents sea. The Cod arrives in Lofoten Islands and in Vesterålen for the reproduction and, due to this, it is also called “Valentine’s fish”.

In order to comply specific quality standards Skrei, the Cod must be:

  • caught between 1st of January and the 30th of April;
  • adult, approx. 5 years old;
  • in perfect conditions: white flesh (without blood spots), well cleaned on the neck and with skin without presence of spots or damages;
  • - packed within 12 hours from the catch.

The history and fishing of the Skrei in Norway

A fish of fundamental importance in the Norwegian culture. Rich in proteins and omega-3 this fish has been a great source of livelihood, mostly in North Norway, where, in the old times, was the unique source of nourishment available. It has been one of the first products to be exported from Norway.
