Norwegian Cod – Skrei
Norwegian cod – Skrei is the Norwegian cod (Gadus Morhua) that meets specific quality standards.
It is caught along the coasts of the Lofoten Islands and Vesterålen, where it arrives after having travelled thousands of kilometres from the north, from the Barents Sea. It arrives on the Lofoten Islands and Vesterålen to reproduce, which is why in Norway they call it Valentine’s Fish.
To reflect Skrei quality standards, cod must be:
• caught between 1st of January and 30th of April
• adult, about 5 years old
• in perfect condition: white flesh (no blood spats), well cleaned on the neck and with skin without nicks or spots
• packed within 12 hours of capture
A fish of fundamental importance to the Norwegian people. Rich in protein and omega-3, it has been a great source of sustenance, especially in northern Norway, when, in ancient times, it was the only available source of nutrition. It was one of Norway’s first export products.
